The missing man table, also known as the POW/MIA table, is a symbol of honor and remembrance for soldiers who are prisoners of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA).

Each key element representing a different aspect of the table's significance:

-
The Empty Chair – A chair left unoccupied to represent the missing or captured individual.
-
The Single Place Setting – The place setting includes the following items:
-
A Plate – Empty, symbolizing the absence of the person.
-
A Glass – Often overturned, symbolizing that the person is not present to drink.
-
A Fork – Placed on the plate, symbolizing that the person is missing during a meal.
-
A Candle – Lit to represent the light of hope for those missing or captured.
-
A Red Rose – Placed on the table as a symbol of the love and support for the missing person’s family.
-
A Lemon Slice – Sometimes placed on the plate, symbolizing the bitter experience of the missing person’s absence.
-
A Salt – Often spilled or sprinkled on the plate, representing the tears of those who wait for the return of their loved ones.
-
-
The American Flag – Draped over the back of the chair or table, it signifies the nation’s responsibility to bring those missing home.
-
A Black Ribbon – Sometimes added to symbolize the grief and mourning for the missing individuals and their families.
